Isle of Wight Day Trip // 20th MAY 2016

    Thanks Denny.

Is there any limit on bikes on either of those trains?

Assuming not as they are going against the rush hour flow but you never know.

Doesn't appear to be any restrictions at that time if we are travelling out of London http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/uploads/cyclesontrains2010map.pdf
  • ah i was going from southampton to west cowes which was quick. there was fantastic bit of road on the southern part of the island i did from ventnor that was far nicer than the military road that circles the island and part of it had just been resurfaced . i’ll dig out the segment/road/village names later.
  • Thanks Gary.

It seems the tickets are only £9 if you go from London Waterloo. Presumably however if you got a Waterloo to Portsmouth ticket you could get on at, say, Clapham Junction, which is what I would want to do?
  • Thanks Denny. When do we need to book? I have card in hand.

The sooner we book the better in terms of guaranteeing the cheap tickets. No time like the present!
  • This is a better link to book from as it has the right train journeys pre-selected http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/WAT/PMH/200516/0900/dep/200516/1830/dep

    9.00 depart, 18.45 return

I've put all of the essential details at the top of the thread. Let me know if you have booked your ticket and I'll update the list.
  • Can I book for all those on the list, and recover payment through bank transfer. Do the booked tickets need to tally to those present?
  • ^ You could but (a) the list is a little old so not sure if anyone has dropped out, and (b) there was talk of some people travelling by car (e.g. Sam from Kent).

  • Roll up! Roll up!

Tickets for DamoMinusDamo(sad face)Train. I'll book on Friday!

    Yay*

*I went to the pub at lunch and had 2 Gamma Rays
  • Work situation has changed, so really not sure if I can book the day off. But you're right Denny, I'd drive over to Guildford and pick up the train there. Otherwise I'd have to be in London for 7am to avoid the train ban. Don't fancy hanging around Waterloo for 2 hours!

You coming by train with us?
  • here was my short jolly on the island

the road between Chale green and Shorwell was lovely as were the backroads below Shorewell and Brightstone. personally i would continue along to Mottistone and Hulverstone before joining the military road at Brook as it starts to rise up and down the cliffs towards the needles.

it’s not head down changing dual carriageway just twisty rolling lanes but you can beast yourself on the 3 big lumps before freshwater bay if it’s all a bit pedestrian and bucolic.

  • Can we just get everyone a ticket.

    Jay will you sort?
  • Ved said:

He has offered to book for everyone on Friday.

Just need to hear back from @NathC @Graham and @Dommy to confirm they are still coming
  • Wow, the site is weird.
If I check fares for 1 adult I get
    Return: £36.40
    2 Singles: £18

If I go to the max number of tickets 8 (why I can't get 10 is besides the point)
    Return: £192.40 (£24.05pp)
    2 Singles: £270.4 (£33.8pp)

    Why?
  • ^ Looks like it automatically gives you a group save if there are 8 of you.

You could book for the 6 that have confirmed at the £18 each price:

I could then book the rest of the tickets when Graham, Dommy and NathC have responded
  • I am in. Please ticket me.
  • Confirmed, I am training it.  Need beers.

  • ^ Does this mean you can come Tom???
  • No unfortunately. Just making an correction
  • Ah yes, my bloody autocorrect changes Dommy to Tommy!
  • Quick question. Are we happy to be booked onto actual trains i.e. no flexibility?
I'm still trying to figure out why it is more expensive to make an 8 person group booking than it is to buy 8 x 2 singles.

    Currently:
    Out at 9:00
    Return at 17:45
    Singles: £23.30
    Group of 8: £192.40 (24.05pp)

Another option would be to get 8 flexible off-peak day returns for 36.40 each.

  • I think it would be better to retain  flexibility.

8 off-peak returns on groupsave is the best bet.

All have to travel together but better than missing a train we're booked on and having to buy another full price ticket.

If there's more than 8 coming, I'm happy to get my own plus any others -  I get 30% gold card discount
  • Denny - Train & Beers
    Jaygee - Train & Beers*
    DanDan - Train & Beers
Will - Still going. By train from CJ. Feel free to buy me a ticket.
    Graham
    Ved - Train & Beers
Dommy - Train & Beers. Will probably get on at CJ as well.
    Nath - Train & Beers
    Sam J - Train & Beers
  • And there were 8. G?
  • Denny - Train & Beers
    Jaygee - Train & Beers*
    DanDan - Train & Beers
Will - Still going. By train from CJ. Feel free to buy me a ticket.
    Graham - Train & Beers
    Ved - Train & Beers
Dommy - Train & Beers. Will probably get on at CJ as well.
    Nath - Train & Beers
    Sam J - Train & Beers
  • Dommy gets to use his freedom pass...
  • OK. So flexible? If so the price is the same if we buy on the day. Also, as far as convenience goes, Clapham Junction works for me.
  • Whatever the price, it would be best to buy before to lessen faff on the day.  Shall we discuss tonight?

  • Good plan.
  • But, if we do get on different stations, that would be problematic.
  • A drunken discussion tonight will sort it all out
  • I'm out unfortunately.

I was told yesterday there is a good chance I have a genetic heart condition. So I've been advised to avoid strenuous exercise until I get a full diagnosis, which is unlikely to happen before 20th May :-(

Keeping all my fingers and crossed I can get back to proper cycling once I've had further tests.

Can I leave sorting out the trains etc in someone else's hands? It seems like Jay's taking care of it anyway...
  • Best of luck Denny.

    Said no-one, ever.
  • Oh Denny.  Hope it is a false alarm.  What a bummer when you have a new bike to play on.
