Isle of Wight Day Trip // 20th MAY 2016
  • Sorry to hear that Denny. Fingers crossed.
  • Denny hope everything resolves itself and things become clearer
  • Cheers folks. I guess I could come down just for the beers and sit in the pub all day while you're riding around :-)
  • Yeah, why not... And I suspect you might unexpectedly find yourself with a whole load of company :)
  • Hope its not too serious.
  • Denny said:

    I'm out unfortunately.

I was told yesterday there is a good chance I have a genetic heart condition. So I've been advised to avoid strenuous exercise until I get a full diagnosis, which is unlikely to happen before 20th May :-(

Keeping all my fingers and crossed I can get back to proper cycling once I've had further tests.

Can I leave sorting out the trains etc in someone else's hands? It seems like Jay's taking care of it anyway...

Denny if you're around tonight we can haz chat?

  • Totally missed that Denny - very sorry to hear it

Thanks Damo. Yes, hoping to still make it tonight but I also have a few family things to sort out now as close family also need to be referred for investigations.

I have a suspected Long QT syndrome, by the way, for all you medical geeks out there!
  • Sorry to hear this denny. Fingers crossed for a favourable diagnosis.
  • Flipping heck. Hope it's nowt serious and just a false alarm, Denny.
  • Good luck Denny, I hope it comes back negative.
  • Did we drunkenly sort this?

I am happy to front the ferry tickets.
  • I don't think so.
  • Weather forecast to be ok, so will look to book this up next week if that holds true.  If we can indicate which station we will be getting the Pompey train from, we can then work out the best ticket plan.

  • Cool. How far in advance do we need to book the tickets to get whatever discount?
  • AFAIK, unless we book specific trains, the cost of flexible returns is the same, even if we buy on the day.

  • "Using super pass

    what’s the going rate for a super-pass?

doing the washing up for a week
multiple foot-rubs and buying a bottle of white wine on the way home from work
    leaving the room to fart
    saying “yes” to everything
not prodding her in the back with your ‘gentleman's embarrassment’ before 8am
watching britains got talent while cuddling on the sofa when all you want to do is look at expensive carbon/anodized aluminium/porn on the internet
  • Work for the right people

In that case, phew, that is nice and simple (albeit pricey)

  • Train (without Dommy discount) and ferry = £57 each  (that's a lot of beer)

  • I may join you at WAT nath
  • I hope the tests show you are OK, Denny, I expect all your exercise will have helped develop some resistance to anything that might not be quite right.
  • Are we still up for this?

Despite falling asleep after today's ride - with a glass of beer in my hand that went all over my jeans which are now in the wash - I think I should just about have the energy the make it round the island.

Weather looks like it should be ok. Obvs if there's rain forecast I imagine we mght knock it on the head...
  • Yep. Is there a set time and place we are meeting? At the ferry port or something?
  • Yes. I have just woken from my snooze and am full of beans. Rain will stop play for me too.
  • I was looking at train times this morning. 8:52 from CJ gets us to Portsmouth about 10:30 but we have to change trains.

9:12 from CJ gets us there about 11 and is direct.

If it rains I'm not going either.
  • I'll go if it rains, as I booked the time off work. Anyone else mind soggy riding?
  • I'm cool with soggy rides as I am fat and slow and need to to learn that not riding bikes is not good for me.
  • Should we leave earlier?
  • I have to admit, after a rather expensive time recently, the £57 is putting me off a little.  The IOW is nice, but is it that nice?  Jokes to cost that much to get there and back.

Just putting it out there, but an open return to Petersfield is £25 and I have always wanted to do this route again https://ridewithgps.com/routes/2416075.  The £32 left over can then go towards a late lunch and beers at a nice country pub.

08:52 from CJ gets us to Petersfield at 10:11.  Or the 09:52 at 11:11.

  • £57? I thought it was less than that. Not sure I can justify that either right now once food and beer is factored in.

Personally not fussed where we ride. Got the day off so happy to go anywhere and cheaper is always preferred.
  • We could do it cheaper but then you have to get the exact train.  For flexible anytime return £38 + £19 for the ferry.
  • ^ I thought we'd worked out that a group save ticket was cheaper?

But then, I'm not going any more, so I should butt out... :-(
  • After this mornings ride in I may not be going either - last club ride I got pretty bad pain on the outside of my right knee in the last 20km, thought it had healed up over the last week and gone away but this morning it was back. Cant put any power through it at all :-(
  • Glute/itb (spurious internet diagnosis by layman) issues.
    Stretch, foam roller etc
  • Maybe we should try and do a pissup in a brewery instead?

I'd still like to go to IOW. Mainly so I can hear Graham speak the language. Not that arsed about rain unless it's also freezing cold. Forecast is currently cloudy and dry.

Train tickets are £19 on Groupsave 4. Would be easier if we all went from same station.

Make a decision, name on the list

  • Count me in for group save tickets and meeting at the same station.

  • Thanks Dommy for the slap.  Love it when you get butch.
  • We are still going dudes.

I'm going to suffer like a dog but it will be LOLZ!

  • I'm very strongly tentative. Unexpectedly busy at work but expecting to be able to re-confirm tomorrow.
  • Are we buying tickets on the day?

Got call with physio tonorrow about my knee so I am in for now but if things don't get any better I may have to bail.

  • Calm down Dommy.

AFAIK only people tentative are DanDan and WillPower.

Hope it goes well Dan. We can buy on the day.

  • Saw physio today. He thinks it is a patella tendon injury and reckons I can ride if I feel it is not too painful - it only shows when I am putting mad power through it so just need to go easy.

Gonna see how it is over next couple of days but tempted to just come along anyway and take it easy on any climbs.
